USSSA uses CamStreamer apps onboard Axis cameras for baseball game streaming

SportTracker App in combination with Axis ARTPEC 8 DLPU camera provides automatic switching of cameras according to the game.

About the project

USSSA (United States Specialty Sports Association) is a sports governing body and multi-sport association. To reach out to a wide audience, USSSA was looking for a quality live streaming solution with easy set up.

Technical Solution

We presented the client with our multi-camera solution, where one camera is facing the field including the pitcher, and the other camera has a view focused on the batter for a close-up. The camera facing the field is equipped with the SportTracker App, an AI powered part of our Sports Solution, which can detect the pitch and automatically switch between views upon detection. 

Most of the fields are using a two-camera solution, one camera facing the field and second facing the batter. In one field, we implemented a three-camera solution. For correct SportTracker App functionality, the camera must be facing the field directly, and we usually stream the match primarily from this camera, but here, the view was partly blocked by the cheering audience. The SportTracker App is detecting pitches without issue and is installed on AXIS P3265-LV, while the live stream of the match is streamed from AXIS P3268-LVE located on the side of the field through CamStreamer App. The batter view is covered by AXIS Q1798-LE.

To the live stream, USSSA also adds scoreboard information, which is pulled by our free script available on GitHub. The script fetches an HTML page, converts it to PNG, and pushes it to selected cameras. Then, using the CamOverlay App, these scores are inserted into the live stream.

The result

USSSA currently covers five of their fields with our solution for streaming their matches. Game streams now run without the need for any manual intervention, are broadcast live, switch upon pitch detection and have integrated scoreboards.
